Scooper Bowl!

Paying $10 for an unlimited amount of ice cream sounds like a good deal to me, especially when that money goes to cancer research. So, I went down to City Hall last week for the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl. As to be expected, it was pretty crowded – I was there on the last day it was open and there were more teenagers and kids than I could count.

The vendors present were Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry’s, Blue Bunny, Breyer’s, Edy’s, Friendly’s, Hood, Byrne Dairy, and Fresh Mango. The friend I went with is lactose intolerant so we were looking out for the frozen yogurt and sherbet, and there were a few options, but not many. I tried to taste at least one thing from each, but some were better than others. In all, I finished 8 cups, two of which were the same, and threw one out.scooperbowl3

My favorites were Ben & Jerry’s Cookies & Cream and Hood’s White Gold, which is a butterscotch ice cream with cinnamon caramel swirls and white chocolate chips. I was most excited to try Friendly’s Nuts over Caramel but they didn’t have it out when I made it to the front of the line. Their Celebration flavor turned out to be the most popular in the text-your-favorite-flavor poll. And of all the frozen yogurts and sherbets, my friend preferred Hood’s Double Chocolate Chip Greek Frozen Yogurt. scooperbowl2

Probably the least impressive was Fresh Mango. They had all frozen yogurt and were offering original, mango, and Oreo flavors. Unfortunately, by the time I was there (around 3pm), their yogurt wasn’t holding up that well. I got the Oreo flavor that had melted quite a bit and had the consistency of slush which wasn’t very pleasant. I’ve never been to their store but I’m guessing it’s a lot better there.

I couldn’t find any figures for this year, but overall the event has raised over $3 million for cancer research. Click here if you want to know more about the flavors served this year.
